The Texas Coastal Bend has had an increase in seagrass and some marshes over the past 50 years but has seen a decrease in tidal flats and palustrine marshes, a mixed bag given the diverse wildlife populations that rely on these habitats for survival.

A recently completed study compared changes in wetland acreage over time and categorized wetland type for similar future comparisons.

Looking at maps and aerial photos from the 1950s, 1979 and 2004, the study, by the University of Texas -Bureau of Economic Geology and conducted by the Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program, determined the acres of each type of wetland, noted increases or decreases over time and suggested probable causes.
